Zambia has one of the poorest education systems in the world: going to school is a luxury not everyone can afford.
Yet education is the best way to disrupt the poverty cycle – through education, we can change our families and communities for the better!
Our Sponsor a Child program provides the opportunity for vulnerable children in the community to attend preschool, but the program can only be a success with your support! We would eventually love to have each child sponsored to take the burden off our parents/caregivers and to encourage children to not miss school.
By sponsoring a child, you are providing them with everything they need for the school year. The sponsorship cost per child is US$450 per year. This includes their school fee, uniform, books, a daily healthy meal, teachers, security, water, electricity, computer literacy and endless learning resources. You will receive regular updates on your sponsored child’s progress and achievements.
Not only will you be supporting a vulnerable child to go to school, you will also be empowering an entire community!!

Memory, Lydia’s mother
I’m so blessed to have received sponsorship for my daughter at Baobuyu, as it has allowed her to have the best education that I could ever imagine.
How do we select our sponsorship candidates?
A small local committee identifies children who are most in need of an education and cannot afford to go to school. The children that are part of our program are those who are vulnerable or orphaned; or have parents/guardians who are hard workers making a significant impact in the community, but simply can’t afford to send their children to school.
We think it is important that our children’s parents/guardians have an interest and involvement both in their child’s education and in our school and community center.
For each child who receives sponsorship, we require that the parent or guardian volunteers for a minimum of 10 hours of community work per term at the school (30 hours per year). The community work could be anything from gardening, to cooking for the kids, to cleaning the school.
At the start of the school year, our sponsored children’s parents sign up to spend the day at Baobuyu and walk in the shoes of our teachers and students. This is important as it improves their understanding of what we do here and what a good education looks like!
We also require that they contribute K100 per year (approximately US$10) towards their child’s education. This ensures that the parents/guardians have a vested interest in their child’s education, as well as making a tangible contribution towards their child’s future.

I am so happy that Getrude has learned so much since she came to Baobuyu. I am so grateful for her sponsors.
