It all started in 2013 as a dream to make a difference in a small rural village called Mwandi in Livingstone, Zambia.
Zambia is one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world, with the majority of the population living in extreme poverty. We wanted to build a preschool and Community Center, with the primary goal being to provide as much FREE education as possible to the entire community.
A few years later, with a lot of hard work, determination, tears, and triumphs; our NGO was set up, land was purchased and Baobuyu Learning Center was born!
We had an ambitious build but constructed the school in just 6 months thanks to a dedicated team of contractors and friends. Our doors opened in January 2016.
Our preschool caters to children aged 2 to 6, split into three classes (a junior, middle and senior class). We started with just 9 students, but our school has grown over time and we now have 30 kids; the majority of whom are sponsored to attend the school through our Sponsor a Child program.
At Baobuyu, we really believe visual and experiential forms of learning are key to engaging young minds. We make sure to use lots of colours, props, games, videos and experiments to keep our kids active and having so much fun they don’t even realise they are learning!
We also want to make sure our kids learn important values such as cooperation, respect for each other, manners, empathy and kindness. We believe that happy, loved and well educated kids will become the best adults.
Our teachers and parents have seen first hand the difference a healthy diet makes to the development and health of kids. Each school day, our kids are provided with a healthy cooked lunch, which keeps their tummies full and brains switched on for a full day of engaged learning.
At the end of 2018, we farewelled our first set of graduates – Wisdom, Dessy, Annetty, Mama G and Blessing – as they entered grade 1 at primary school. We are so proud of the progress our school has made since it first opened in 2016 and of the achievements of our students!
